Outside of the outstanding benefits of sporting a well-groomed beard, beard growth has become a symbol of men’s health. Once a year, in the month of November, men across the world grow their facial hair to help boost awareness for issues related to the health of males. No-Shave November is about increasing the awareness of the various cancers that affect males.

 What is No-Shave November?

The initiative is geared towards saving a family from losing their father or son. Cancers such as prostate cancer and testicular cancer are very common among men and have left the hearts of many broken. These forms of cancer can be prevented. If more men knew about the negative impact that certain practices have on their bodies and what to do to prevent the development of cancer, many lives could be saved. This is the primary goal of No-Shave November.

No-Shave November is a formal organization today. This initiative began back in 2009 with a Facebook campaign to raise money to help men. This initiative was started by the Hill family who is based in Chicago. In 2007, they lost their father, Matthew Hill, to colon cancer. This really devastated the family. Their pain gave birth to a global fight against cancer. They committed their resources to help men learn more about cancer and how to prevent it.

The core concept of No-Shave November is to grow your hair freely with little or no grooming. It is an expression of appreciation of still having hair. Why celebrate hair? When cancer patients undergo chemotherapy, they tend to lose their hair. The organization encourages men to donate the money that they would typically use on grooming and caring for their hair to strengthen the mission of educating men about cancer prevention, save lives, and assist those who are already fighting the battle against this monster.

How to Get Involved

It is simple to get to participate in No-Shave November. Start the month with a fresh face and do not groom until November 30. Think of yourself as a walking advertisement for men’s health and, more specifically, cancer prevention in men. Your participation can make a huge difference.

The bigger your beard grows is the better. It is the typically the practice of people who participate in the No-Shave November event to post pictures of their facial hair growth on social media. These images are typically accompanied by the hashtag #noshavenovember. Women can also participate in No-Shave November. No, you don’t have to have a beard to get involved. A female can avoid grooming their body hair such as their legs and armpits as they typically would.

No-Shave November partnered with the American Cancer Society in 2013. Since then, the No-Shave November events have raised more than $3.5 million for the society. The organization has also partnered with the Prevent Cancer Foundation, Fight Colorectal Cancer, and St. Jude’s.

No Shave November 2020

There are many forms of cancers that men and women should be aware of. When it comes to men, two that they need to pay close attention to are prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

What You Need to Know About Prostate Cancer

One of the most common types of cancers in America is prostate cancer. Cancer.net reported that in 2020, there will be 191,930 new cases of prostate cancer. The men that are mostly affected by this type of cancer are those over the age of 65. While it is not common, there are cases of prostate cancer being detected men younger than 40 years old. Black men are more affected by prostate cancer than white men. It has been reported that there are 60% more cases of prostate cancer among black men than white men.

One of the messages of No-Shave November is for men who are at an age where their risk for prostate cancer is high to get assessed by a physician. If prostate cancer is detected when it is in the local or regional stage, there is a great chance that the male will be able to live for another 5 years; however, if prostate cancer is detected after it has spread to other parts of the body, there is 31% chance that the patient will be able to live for 5 years. When prostate cancer is detected at the local or regional stage, there is a 98% chance that the individual will live for another 10 years and possibly more.

What You Need to Know About Testicular Cancer

The American Cancer Society has reported that about 8,000 men will be diagnosed with testicular cancer in America in 2020. This type of cancer can be effectively treated if it is detected at an early stage.

Unlike prostate cancer, testicular cancer is commonly found in younger males between the ages of 15 and 35. It is important to note that testicular cancer can still be found in older men. Testicular cancer accounts for approximately 1% of all male cancers.

An undescended testicle is one of the primary causes of testicular cancer. This condition is referred to as cryptorchidism. Individuals with this condition are several times more likely to get testicular cancer than others. About 3% of boys experience cryptorchidism. It is often the case that the undescended testicle or testicles continue to drop as it should during the first year of a boy’s life.

The mission behind No-Shave November is honorable. It is also a fun trend that men across the world can participate in while making a difference. We invite you to participate in this event and donate to the fight against cancer in men. So, park the beard butter, the beard grooming kit, and all the other beard stuff and let’s join together in this fight against cancer.

So take this time in the month of November to let your beard grow and learn how to prevent cancer in Men.
